Nero The Antichrist ? No

Revelation 1:9

I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

John was exiled to the island of Patmos during the 1st. Century either by Nero or Domitian. Preterists need the apostle’s banishment to be under Nero for their views of the Book of Revelation and end-times events to be legitimate. Nero ruled from 54 to 68 AD. Domitian ruled from 81 to 96 AD. Preterists claim that the Book of Revelation (and other passages in the Bible) are about the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD and not a future prophecy of things unfolding before the Second Coming of Christ. In fact, preterists believe that Christ has already returned in 70 AD. If John wrote the Book of Revelation under the reign of Domitian then everything the preterist believes is void of truth.
Until the early part of the 20th Century, Christian tradition placed the dating of John’s exile to Patmos and the writing of the Book of Revelation under the reign of Domitian. So why are we suddenly questioning church history ? One simple answer is Bertrand Russell. He wrote a book titled WHY I AM NOT A CHRISTIAN in 1927. In that book, Russell said he could not believe in Jesus’ claims because his return did not happen during the lifetime of those He spoke to. Preterism was the “intellectual” answer to Russell’s claims.

Hmmmm.

Did you know that there is no record of Nero banishing Christians to Patmos ?
Not one source, Christian or secular, within 500 years of the 1st. Century places John’s banishment under Nero.

Did you know that Nero had the Apostle Paul beheaded in 67 AD ? Did you know that he also had the Apostle Peter crucified in 67 AD ? Why in the world would he banish the Apostle John to Patmos ? The historical records speak of Nero’s brutality and blood lust. Period. Why would he be lenient on John ? Domitian was a different story though. Tertullian (quoted by the historian Eusebius) says that Domitian was cruel but was more intelligent than Nero and used banishment as a form of punishment.

Hmmmm.

Arthur C. Clarke said that his favorite definition of an intellectual was someone who had been educated beyond their intelligence.

My definition of a preterist ? Someone who has been educated beyond the Word of God.
